Barry's Tips

Spring is approaching fast! Time to break out lipless crank baits, jerk baits, soft plastic jerk baits - like flukes etc. Ed and I have had some really productive days in the spring with these baits; and I caught my biggest bass in March on a Rattlin' Rap. It was a nine and three quarter pound largehead on Lake Logan Martin.

For years lipless crank baits have been called idiot baits because you throw it out and crank it in. There is no right or wrong way to work them, but they work exceptionally well during the prespawn time because the bass go on a feeding spree to fatten up for the actual spawning season itself. There will be times when cold fronts move through which means you may have to change your tactics. Try going to deeper water and slower moving baits. Jigs, spoons, lizards, and craws work well in this situation. Even though the fish have changed their feeding patterns, they still have the instinct to eat. As the water warms during the day they will go back to a normal feeding habit, fast and furious.

The really big fish get dumb and the really small fish get bigger, when they fill up with eggs. Get your nets out and be prepared, that fish of a lifetime may be on the next cast. Be safe and good luck.
