BamaBassFishing Newsletter, June 2008 Issue June 01, 2008 |
Produced by Ed Majors and Barry Brasher Co-Owners - BamaBassFishing.com Barry's Tips
If you didn't get a chance to read my last article, I listed several different ways or places to catch bass. For the next several months on Barry's Tips I will be giving tips on how, when, and why to fish these places.
I will start with pier fishing because it is one of the most productive. Piers are on every lake or river system in Alabama. They offer good cover and shade for bass. That is WHY we fish piers. Now lets move on to WHEN. Anytime you are on the water is a good time to fish piers, no matter what time of the year. In the spring of the year any pier can hold fish shallow or deep. All you need to do is work the pier from where it starts to the end to find where most of the fish will be located. During the summer I look for deeper piers with brush on them. This will save you time if you fish tournaments. Fall is about the same as spring, except they seem to be a little more spread out between shallow and deep water, so fish it out good and be ready for the bite. Winter time is really tough for me, because fish are not very active so it takes a lot of patience and a slow presentation. Depth doesn't play a big part in the winter because the water temperature will determine that for you. The colder it is the deeper you might want to fish. When fishing piers you need to determine what kind of pier you are going to fish and stick to your plan, this will keep you from fishing unproductive water. Before we move on to HOW, I will say a pier that has post and ladders will be the most productive. As far as HOW to fish a pier, this is up to you. There is no right or wrong way, just have confidence in what you are doing and the bite will come. Here are some of the methods I use - Shakey heads, crank baits, Texas style rigged worms, spinner baits - pretty much any way known to man. Fishing is trial and error, so just do what you are comfortable doing. If it don't work try something else. Here are some suggestions; flipping, pitching, and skipping, which you can learn to do on BamaBassFishing.com Good Luck and HAVE FUN! Barry Email me with any questions at Barry@bamabassfishing.com.
