Barry's Tips

The Pre-spawn Season

I know you have heard the phrase pre-spawn a million times, but do really know what it means? The idea of pre-spawn is that the fish are looking for places to clear beds and lay eggs. What most bass look for are large flat areas with easy access to deeper water.

This is a very interesting time of the year to fish for me. It can be very productive or just down right aggravating. Weather plays a big part in fishing. Cold fronts move through and the fish get lock jaw, but if you have several warm days together the fishing can become great. Not only does the fishing get good but the fish get bigger. The females start feeding heavily and start to develop eggs. From now till the spawn you could catch that trophy you've been looking for all your life. The biggest bass of my life came in March. It was a nine and three quarter pound largemouth. Boy I wish I had caught it during a tournament, but it looks good on my wall anyway. Well lets get back to fishing the pre spawn.

LIZARDS and LIPLESS CRANK BAITS are the big secret. RATTLE TRAPS, RATTLIN RAPS ETC. can be very productive. Color and size is sort of a trial and error thing till you find something that works on the lake you are fishing. LIZARDS on the other hand can be fished many different ways. I have fished them Carolina rigged, Texas rigged, etc. and been very productive with all. My favorite color is any shade of green - watermelon, chartreuse, pumpkin seed., etc.

The main thing is to have confidence in what you are using and being mentally prepared to set the hook. I know I have said this over and over but bass fishing is more mental than physical you have to be ready for every bite you get. Lose your concentration and your going to lose fish. That is probably the hardest thing to teach any fisherman wanting to go out and catch fish, but if you aren't mentally prepared to catch fish, you won't. Unless you just happen into a big school of stupid fish. It happens, but not very often. Be prepared and be safe.

See You On The Lake

Bama Bass Fishing Store

Just another reminder to visit our new BBF Store!

We have partnered with some of the biggest names in fishing and created an online store where you can shop for anything you might need in the way of tackle, lures, books - even boats! All of these items are things you will buy anyway - but now you can shop in one place and help support your favorite bass fishing site! Granted we only get a tiny commission off everything you buy, but this will help us continue to improve the site and bring you all the information you need for bass fishing in Alabama. And best of all - we have the best prices on the web and it won't cost you a dime more!

Visit the BBF Store and let us know what you think. And when you "go shopping" for that new rod and reel or subscribe to a new magazine, remember to start your trip in the BBF Store. Barry and I will thank you and will continue to bring you new information to the site.

Thanks again,

Ed
