Barry's Tips

May Tips

May is a great time to fish, if you know what to look for. Fish can be coming off the bed or they may be just going on the bed. It all depends on the weather. Either way it really does not make any difference, the fish are going to bite. All you have to do is know what to look for. I will explain.

If you start out at daylight and the fish are hitting top water baits, then probably they are coming off the bed and looking for food. But if they are still on bed the bite is going to be a little more difficult. When you get a bite and you set the hook and "come up empty" then they are picking the bait up and moving it off their beds. This is where sight fishing really comes in handy. Sight fishing is exactly what it says, you see the fish before you catch it. Move into skinny water and look for them bedding fish. Drag a tube bait or lizard across their bed and you are going to get bit. The main thing to this fishing is timing. When you feel a strike set the hook, if you don't then the fish is going to spit it out. When on the bed, bass are not looking for food they are just protecting their bed. So watch your line. If you see it moving off or even coming toward you, set the hook.

I am not much on sight fishing, but I am old and can't see; so I do the next best thing and feel the bite. Concentration plays a big part in any type of fishing, but you really have to be on your toes to catch bedding fish. They will only give you a second to set that hook so be ready. Who knows it might be that fish of a lifetime.

And just F.Y.I. if you are looking for a good time to spend with the family and kids, this is a great time to go bream fishing. They usually start their bedding on the first full moon in May. This is a great time to introduce that kid to fishing that has not ever been, and bream is a very good eating fish. I have started all my kids this way and every time I load the boat they are ready to go. Keep what you need and throw the rest back, teach catch and release for the next generations . Have a great time and I will see you on the lake.

Bama Bass Fishing Store

Just another reminder to visit our new BBF Store!

We have partnered with some of the biggest names in fishing and created an online store where you can shop for anything you might need in the way of tackle, lures, books - even boats! All of these items are things you will buy anyway - but now you can shop in one place and help support your favorite bass fishing site! Granted we only get a tiny commission off everything you buy, but this will help us continue to improve the site and bring you all the information you need for bass fishing in Alabama. And best of all - we have the best prices on the web and it won't cost you a dime more!

Visit the BBF Store and let us know what you think. And when you "go shopping" for that new rod and reel or subscribe to a new magazine, remember to start your trip in the BBF Store. Barry and I will thank you and will continue to bring you new information to the site.

Thanks again,

Ed
