Barry's Tips

Fall Fishing

Fall is one of the best times of the year to fish. The average fisherman can spend a day on the lake and have more success than any other time of the year. Bass go on a feeding spree to get ready for the winter months. These fish are easy to locate just by watching the surface of the water for feeding activity. Bass school up and chase bait fish all over the lake. I don't think there is a wrong way to fish, unless you close your eyes and go to sleep. So stay alert to what the bait fish are doing, and even watch the birds diving into the water. This will help you locate schools of bait fish which in turn will help you locate a school of fish. Timing also plays a big part in fall fishing. I am not saying they won't bite all day long, but early morning and late afternoon seems to be the best. What I look for to start off my fall fishing techniques is a big secret. Butterflies – Yellow butterflies start their migration and you will see them everywhere. ANYWAY just one of my Barryisms that I tell people just to make them think, hey it's fall.

Well I will stop rambling and tell you my techniques. As the water cools down, my first choice for early and late fishing is swim baits and top water baits. Midday I like to throw lipless crank baits and worms, and let's not forget about the ever popular willow-leaf spinner bait. I usually fish fast to cover more water, but sometimes it will be more productive to slow your retrieve and do a little finesse fishing. Shaky heads and Carolina rigs are a good choice when the fishing is slow.

Another good technique for fall is live bait. When I just want to go out and be lazy, I will load up the shad tank, go to a place where I have caught fish for years and just chill. Hook up a shad and let it swim till something eats it. BUT this can turn into work because it is probably the most productive way of fishing. I have caught thousands of fish using this method and it is JUST DOWNRIGHT FUN. Just get you some shad, pull up on a point, anchor or drift about five to ten foot deep and hang on. I like to show people how to do this because they are amazed at the size and numbers of fish we catch. I always practice catch and release, so I don't feel bad about catching so many fish. Another good thing about this type of fishing is it does not cost anything except gas to get there. I try to put in close to where I am going to fish and sometimes never even crank my motor but still manage to catch twenty to thirty fish. It doesn't take much skill to master this technique so give it try and let us know how it turns out. Any questions on how, contact us here. Have fun and be safe.
