1. Let the kids have their say in how the day goes. Involve them in the decision-making process of the trip. For example, ask them what time they think you need to leave, and what kind of food and drink to take. Make them feel like it's really their trip. 2. As much as you may be itching to join the kids, leave your rod and reels at home. That way you can focus exclusively on them. 3. Let the kids pick the fishing spot and choose when and where to cast. Sure, it's okay to offer advice, but let them have the final say. 4. Don’t target fish that are tough to catch on their first outing. Most kids would much rather catch a lot of fish rather than one big one. 5. Bream, crappie, and blue gill are perfect to target on a child's first fishing excursion. Alabama Has A Free Fishing Day!6. Try fishing with live bait rather than lures. This keeps the kids from having to throw numerous casts just to catch a fish. Put a live minnow on the hook and the kids will be mesmerized just watching the bobber as it swims around in circles. Plus, the live bait will offer some entertainment when fishing is slow. Younger kids usually love to open the bait bucket and watch the bait swim. Don't get angry or upset--join them! 7. Put a big, colorful bobber on the line. That way the kids can actually see the fish strike. 8. When the kids begin to get restless, suggest moving to another spot. Find a back cove with calm water and an abundance of wildlife. Point out all of the different wildlife to them. 9. Set a good example by practicing all safety regulations. Kids learn by seeing and doing. Instill safety at an early age, and kids will remember it for a lifetime. 10. Practice catch and release. Only keep what you're going to eat. This will ensure that when your kids get older, they'll have the same great fisheries that you have today. 11. Let the kids decide when it's time to call it a day. Don't wait until the fish stop biting or until you get tired. If you make the kids stay longer than they want to, they probably won't want to go at all the next time.
