Fising Lake Wedowee

Lake Wedowee is the newest of the fourteen Alabama Power Company hydroelectric developments. Built at one of the last major hydro sites in Alabama, the site was named in honor of Rother L. "Judge" Harris, an Alabama Power director. The 10,660 acre lake has 270 miles of shoreline and is located in northeast Alabama on the upper Tallapoosa River in Randolph and Clay Counties.

Recreational attractions include boating, skiing, swimming and camping with public boat launches easily accessible. Campsites for RV's, trailers and tent campers are also available, with more "popping up" every year. When it comes to fishing, Lake Wedowee is recognized as one of the finest lakes in the Southeast, both in quality of water and its sizeable bass population.

A 13- to 16-inch slot limit was placed on black bass (including largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass) on October 1, 1993. This slot limit means that only fish shorter than 13-inches and longer than 16-inches can be harvested from the lake. Bass that are between 13- and 16-inches must be released. The objectives of the slot limit are to restructure the bass population by protecting fish in the slot that are deficient in numbers. A regulation change allowing all sizes of spotted bass to be harvested became effective 1 April 2006. Largemouth bass are still under the 13 to 16 inch slot limit.

According to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, since the implementation of the slot limit, numbers of smaller bass are declining and numbers of fish longer than 14-inches are increasing. Growth rates are improving as is the plumpness of bass. These improvements are a direct result of educating anglers on the importance of removing bass smaller than 13-inches. Continued harvest of small bass is necessary to ensure sustained improvements in the fishery.

Bass Fishing Lakes, Alabama lakes, Alabama bass fishing, bass fishing in Alabama With some of the catches in the past few years weighing near the state record, your next trip to Lake Wedowee could possibly put you in the record books. The Little Tallapoosa River makes up approximately 1/3 of the lake, and is home to the lakes only two marinas. The lake has standing timber, bluffs, bluffs with standing timber, clay banks, rocky shoreline, rocky points, stumps, fallen trees, under water roadbeds, and just about any other cover you can think of.

Largemouth and spotted bass are targeted on the lake. This lake has a lot of smaller sized largemouth and spotted bass. Don't let this discourage you, because there are some monsters in this lake as well (some largemouth bass are over 10 pounds). The spotted bass fishing is great and the crappie fishing is also very good.

Crappie in the 3 lb size is not uncommon in the spring and winter! White bass are also common in the deep water of the lake. They are 1-2 lb average with some pushing 4 lbs [state record is 4 lbs, 9 oz.]. Striper fishing is done below the dam in the tailraces and down to Lake Martin. Cat-fishing is also good when they are in feeding areas and out of the deep channels.

Whether you enjoy fishing from a boat, a pier, or a bank, and whether you prefer open water or secluded inlets, you'll find a great fishing spot on Lake Wedowee. This is a fisherman's paradise. Species that can be found in Lake Wedowee include: Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, White Bass, Striped Bass, Hybrid Striper, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Bluegill, Longear Sunfish, Redear Sunfish, Channel Catfish, and Flathead Catfish. For trophy bass or just a great time fishing, try Lake Wedowee. You will not be disappointed!

Good fishing.
