Spinning Reels Or Bait Casting Reels -
Which is Best???

Many people swear by spinning reels for every type of fishing there is, and for good reason. These rod and reel combos offer a wide variety of options. Light, medium and heavy action. It all will depend on the type of fishing you plan to do. Long, short and even extra long for surf fishing etc. I prefer a spinning reel when fishing light lures, opposed to a bait casting reel for the simple reason they don't back lash. It's also much easier to throw long distances and be a lot more accurate. Of course lets not forget about the ultra light rigs that are perfect for spinning combos. There is nothing more fun than fishing this rig for panfish.

Having said this, and owning several of these, I have three times as many bait casting rigs. Bait casting rigs are a lot more durable and easier to fish heavy lures with. These rigs are the same as spinning as far as offering a large variety of rod sizes, and even gear ratios. The line is easier to spool on a bait cast than on spinning reels. They will cast long distances, and have a very smooth retrieve. It is easier to fish a bait casting rig because of rod position. You seem to have a tendency to fish a spinning reel in a vertical position and a bait cast in a horizontal position which gives you a lot better hook set. Fishing vertical takes longer to set the hook because you have to drop the rod or crank down to get a good hook set. Bait casters, if fished right, are always in a good hook setting position.

Let me say there is no right or wrong rig to use. It is just a matter of preference and what you are comfortable with. And I will admit it does take longer to become comfortable with a bait cast reel, but the catch ratio will improve two to one. Just my opinion - what's yours? Contact me at barry@bamabassfishing.com. GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!!!!!!

See you at the lake
